 BIODIVERSITY

We have been very busy in Science! We did a great Smartboard activity about how greater biodiversity decreases the likelihood of disease spreading and/destroying an ecosystem. Ask your child about what the activity involved; they were excited about getting their hands on the Smartboard!

We did a shared reading from our Nelson text book about classification. We did this chorally when I learned that many students were ignoring punctuation while reading aloud.

This week we will be making Frayer Models of the five major vertebrate divisions: Mammals, Birds, Fish, Amphibians and Reptiles. These will be posted around the room by week's end.

Thus far we have been looking at defining Biodiversity. We discussed a simple, yet profound quote from Indian Environmentalist Vandana Shiva, today:

The students have learned the Five Kingdoms of Living Things: Animals, Plants, Fungi, Monera and Protists.

Now we will use the Linnaean Classification system to investigate how living things are grouped.
